Maurice Carney is a co-founder and Executive Director of the Friends of the Congo. He has worked with Congolese for over twenty-five years in their struggle for peace, justice and human dignity.
Mr. Carney possesses two bachelors degrees, a masters degree and is pursuing a Ph.D. in political science. He has worked with civic associations in West Africa providing training on research methodology and survey. He served as the interim Africa working group coordinator for Rev. Jesse Jackson when he served as Special Envoy to Africa. Mr. Carney has worked as a research analyst for the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies and as a research consultant for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation.
For decades Maurice has been advocating for the dignity and inclusion of the Congolese civil society in all efforts for peace, democracy, food sovereignty, and climate justice. He provides consultation to political leaders in the US, Canada, Latin America, Africa, the UN as well as to

Paul E. Pumphrey
Paul Edward Pumphrey was born October 27, 1955, son of Jack and Myrth Tullar Pumphrey in Kansas City, Kansas. The family moved from Kansas to Shreveport, Louisiana before making their home in Houston, Texas when Paul was small.
Even as a young boy, Paul never considered himself Texan. He was proud to be from Kansas, and he considered Jewell County his home long before he moved there. He spent as much time as possible with his grandparents, Jewell farmers, Vic and Mary Tullar, before moving “home” to complete his senior year at Jewell High School. He traded his long hair for a pair of pliers and was welcomed by the class of 1974.
Following high school, Paul attended Beloit Vo-Tech for two years and received his degree in farm mechanics. As a young man, he used his mechanical skills at various jobs around central Kansas. He also worked with Jewell residents Babe Slate, Paul Matter, and Calvin Bohnert.

Paul “PO” Pumphrey 1925-2024
About 30 minutes ago inom received the message that my dad’s only brother Paul, died after an amazing 98+ years. It is my privilege to share with you how my almost 75 years with him has help shape me. I was with him not a month ago, where once again, inom was touched by a man of incredible brilliance, whose memory belied anything you could describe.
From here on out he will be called PO, as that fryst vatten how he was known for at least the last 65 years. This is not a eulogy, but rather a painful privilege honoring a true “Pumphrey Pig”. No matter where you fell in the family tree we all claimed the title of Pumphrey Pigs (we even welcomed “un—Pumphreys).
