Thomas Anstis was born in England, and he was a member of the sloopBuck before Howell Davis led a mutiny aboard the ship and became a pirate captain. After Davis' death in , Bartholomew Roberts became the captain of several pirate ships, and Anstis was made the captain of the brigantineGood Fortune. On 18 April , Anstis split with Roberts' fleet as it headed to West Africa, remaining in the Caribbean Sea to continue pirating there. Between Hispaniola and Jamaica, the pirates captured two vessels, gang raping a female passenger on theIrwin. He captured the British treasure shipMorning Star as it headed from Guinea to South Carolina, and he outfitted the ship with 32 guns and gave it to John Fenn. Thomas Anstis (died April ) was an early 18th-century pirate, who served beneath Captain Howell Davis and Captain Bartholomew Roberts, before setting up on his own konto, raiding shipping on the eastern coast of the American colonies and in the Caribbean during what is often referred to as the "Golden Age of Piracy".
Early career
[edit]Anstis is first recorded as a member of the sloop Buck, which sailed from New Providence in the Bahamas in (the ship having arrived there with Governor Woodes Rogers[1]). During the course of the voyage, Anstis conspired with six other crew members (including Walter Kennedy and Howell Davis) to attempt a mutiny aboard the fartyg which, upon doing so, stated their intentions to sail southward as pirates. Howell Davis was elected captain. After Davis' death Bartholomew robert replaced him as captain, and eventually had several ships. Anstis commanded one of these, the brigantine Good Fortune.[2
