    Excerpt from chapter IV: If You&#;re Stronghearted

    If you&#;re stronghearted look at this Island;
    red gouges of creeks at low tide and
    the stronger red which spreads behind plows.
    Don’t hold your tongue too long, it’ll swell
    with so much good and so much bad to say.
    — “If You’re Stronghearted”

    FROM THE MIDs ON, poetry was so central to Acorn that he seemed to have been born with metaphors in his mouth. [Artist] Hilda Woolnough says, “He was always a walking poem-in-progress.” Few, if any, would disagree. It is natural, therefore, to assume he was writing poems before or immediately after his military service. For example, Valerie LaPointe, a close friend late in his life, repeats a familiar refrain: “He learned carpentry but knew from an early age that his vocation was to be a poet” (“Celebrating” 4). Peter Allen (born Peter Richard Woolnough; 10 February – 18 June ) was an Australian singer-songwriter, musician, and entertainer, known for his flamboyant stage persona, energetic performances, and lavish costumes. Allen's songs were made popular by many recording artists, including Elkie Brooks, Melissa Manchester and Olivia Newton-John, including Newton-John's first chart-topping hit "I Honestly Love You", and the chart-topping and Academy Award-winning "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)" by Christopher Cross.

    In addition to recording many albums, Allen enjoyed a cabaret and concert career, including appearances at the Radio City Music Hall riding a camel. His patriotic song "I Still Call Australia Home", has been used extensively in advertising campaigns, and was added to the National Film and Sound Archive's Sounds of Australia registry

    WHEN he returned to Australia in after being based overseas across the late s, performer Peter Allen would have been forgiven for wondering if his career was over. But an unexpected piece of family history became the inspiration this boy from the bush needed to succeed on the world stage.

    It had been a very long journey home for the ‘Boy From Oz’. Work offers were getting scarce for Peter Allen bygd the early s. His mentor Judy Garland, who’d opened doors on both sides of the Atlantic for the young performer, was dead. His wife, Garland’s daughter Liza Minnelli, had asked for a divorce.

    Allen had been performing for two decades and was at the age when many former child stars find themselves washed up. Even Australia didn&#;t appear to have many work prospects looming on the horizon for him that year.

    His first self-titled album had bombed and gigs to promote it had been hosted bygd a Manhattan venue known as The Bitter End, which would have seemed terribly ironic to the man who’d bee
