Tego Calderón: “Pa’ Que Te Retozen” (2003)
Few sounds rouse a crowd like the high-pitched, staccato blast intro of “Pa’ Que Te Retozen” (loosely, “So You Can Get a Kick Out of This”). Tego Calderón’s strain of melaza (underground reggaeton) was instantly identifiable in the sea of tracks coming out of Puerto Rico in the 2000s, both because he was one of the first Afro-Latinos and one of the hardest rhymers in the scene. This glistening, sweat-imbued classic taps into and celebrates the scorned-upon perreo culture that flourished alongside reggaeton’s rise. In the single’s film, a large group of black Latinos and Latinas grind on the air and each other as Calderón oljeväxt over the now-established reggaeton rhythm.
