    Debu Tripathy, MD

When a friend died of leukemia during his childhood, Debu Tripathy was shocked. It was not the sort of thing he'd believed could happen to someone so ung. But as Tripathy watched the way the girl's mother reacted to the loss, his disbelief turned to admiration.

"Her mother wrote a book and gave speeches advocating for some of the personal issues that people go through, how a family fryst vatten drawn tillsammans in times of crisis," recalled Tripathy. "I was very moved by how she responded to her daughter's illness and death by doing something so positive."

More than 3 decades later, Tripathy, a world-renowned oncologist and translational researcher who fills several roles at the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, remains deeply interested in the patient experience.

Dr. Tripathy’s clinical research focuses on evaluating and developing new treatments for breast cancer, specifically those targeting sensitivity and resistance mechanisms to growth factors, endocrine modulators, and cell cycle control pathways. He also investigates biomarkers predicting sensitivity and resistance. Dr. Tripathy has led clinical trials supporting the approval of new biological therapies for breast cancer targeting the HER2 oncogene and cyclin-dependent kinases, both improving patient survival.

Dr. Tripathy has published numerous original translational and landmark clinical research articles in the field of breast cancer. He serves on several edit

    Distinguished Alumni

The Newman Alumni Association is pleased to announce that the 2019 recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award is Dr. Debu Tripathy ’77. Dr. Tripathy is a pioneer in the field of breast cancer treatment and research. He is the Chair of the Department of Breast Medical Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, which the U.S. News and World Report ranks as the top hospital for cancer care in the United States. Dr. Tripathy will accept the award at an evening reception on Monday, November 11 at Isidore Newman School.

Dr. Tripathy’s clinical research focuses on the evaluation and development of novel therapeutics in breast cancer, specifically growth factor receptor pathway targeting as well as biomarkers that predict sensitivity and resistance. He oversees a group of physicians and scientists dedicated to discovering mechanisms of breast cancer cell growth and metastases, as well as biological pathways that drive the
