    Professor Kithure Kindiki was sworn in as the third deputy president of Kenya under the 2010 Constitution on Friday, November 1, 2024.

    Kindiki’s assumption of office followed the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, following his fallout with President William Ruto.

    In his acceptance speech after being sworn in, Kindiki promised to be a “loyal and faithful deputy president”.

    “Words fail me to explain how grateful I am today. I’m grateful to President Ruto for the honour he has given me to serve under him. I have been his political student for 20 years and nothing in the political space has helped me pick up lessons more than the years that I have walked around him,” he said.

    Tremendous progress has been made in relation to the protection of human rights all over the world. Nevertheless, accounts of human rights violations continue to be a major feature in many countries. [1] How framträdande democracies ought to address the human rights violations of the recent past when the perpetrators still wield considerable political or military influence is a significant bekymmer.     Abraham Kithure Kindiki (born 17 July 1972)[1] is a Kenyan politician and lawyer who is the 13th and current deputy President of Kenya since 1 November 2024. He previously served as the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration from 2022 to 2024 and as the Senator for Tharaka-Nithi County from 2013 to 2022.[2]

    Early life and education

    Kindiki was born and raised in Meru District. Kindiki attended Lenana School[3] where he scored Grade C in his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). Since this grade failed to meet university pass mark he decided to retake the exam at Tharaka Boys High School, in the then Meru District.[4]

    In 1998, he obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree (LLB) from Moi University. In 2000 he obtained a Master of Laws (LLM) in International Human Rights Law and Democracy from the University of Pretoria in South Africa. He also attended
