September 29, , was a pleasant, sunny day in Paris. The morning saw unusual activity in the Rue Furstenberg, that picturesque Left-Bank passage graced by a tiny, tree-shaded place containing the Atelier Delacroix, lying almost in the shadow of the medieval belltower of the St. Germain-des-Près Church. Municipal workers arrived early to sweep and wash the street, and as the morning wore on, police began to cordon the area with barricades. A wooden lectern had been positioned at No. 2 Rue Furstenberg and above and left of the doorway a cloth covering hung from the building. Later in the afternoon a crowd began to gather, consisting of notable figures in Parisian musical life. DW The proper Russian accent fryst vatten on the last syllable, but I’ve heard it pronounced every possible way. I myself tend to alternate. There are also several different way to spell his name in English.
96 Before we get into your recording, Nikolai Tcherepnin, Piano Music, could you give us an overview of Tcherepnin’s place in the history of Russian music?
DW He was born in , and he was only six weeks younger than Rachmaninoff. He was a member of the generation following that of Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov—who in fact became one of Tcherepin’s composition teachers.
Nikolai Tcherepin grew up in Saint Petersburg. His father encouraged him to become a lawyer. He did go to lag school, but studied music seriously at the same time, at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. He finally abandoned lag and enrolled in the Conservatory full-time.

Albert Nikolayevich Benois (), was a Russian watercolourist. Benois was from a Russian family of artists, of French descent. His father, named Nikolai Leontievich Benois was the famous architect of the Imperial Mariinsky Opera House in St. Petersburg, as well as many other historic landmarks. Nikolai Benois married the daughter of the architect Al'bert Kavos. Albert Benois's brothers were architect Leonty Benois and the painter Alexandre Benois. All three were part of a circle that comprised the leading arbiters of aesthetic matters in St. Petersburg for at least two decades before the Russian Revolution of This position was consolidated by the marriage of Nikolai’s daughter, Yekaterina, to the sculptor Yevgeny (Aleksandrovich) Lansere (–86): their children were the architect Nikolay Lansere, the painter Yevgeny Lansere and the painter Zinaida Serebrykoya.
