Meta Vaux Warrick Fuller (MEE-tə VOW; born Meta Vaux Warrick; June 9, – March 13, [a]) was an African-American artist who celebrated Afrocentric themes. At the fore of the Harlem Renaissance, Warrick was known for being a poet, painter, theater designer, and sculptor of the black American experience. At times when Black women artists were rarely given the opportunity of a proper training in the visual arts and sculpture was considered a man’s world, Meta Vaux Warrick Fuller became a pioneering sculptor whose work wrapped in symbolism introduced African subjects and depicted the Black experience ahead of her contemporaries. Born during the Jim Crow era of racial segregation into a middle class African-American Philadelphia family in , M. Fuller’s barbershop-owning father and hairdresser mother were able to encourage her artistic abilities and provide her with an education in the arts. At a young age she was overwhelmed by sculptures while visiting art exhibitions and was inspired by ghost stories and tales of horror. At the age of 17 she won a three-year scholarship to attend the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art before travelling to Paris.

Biographical Information
Celebrated as a sculptor whose artistic vision and understanding of the black experience was well ahead of her contemporaries, Meta Fuller was the first black American artist to draw heavily on African themes and folk tales for her subject matter. She was a native of Philadelphia and the product of black middle-class rearing. She attended the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Arts (now the Philadelphia College of Art) from to and continued her studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia from to By , however, Fuller was already an established artist in Paris, where her work had been exhibited at Siegfried Bing’s famous gallery for modern art and design.
In choosing her subject matter Fuller looked to the songs of black Americans and to African folk tales for inspirational themes that focused on pathos and joy in the human condition. Fuller introduced America to the power of black American and African subjects long before the
