Short biography of Nicolaus Copernicus
Nicolaus Copernicus, born 19 February 1473 in Torun, died 24 May 1543 in Frombork. Polish astronomer, mathematician, economist and cleric. In the years 1491 - 1494 he studied at the Cracow Academy, then, from 1496, astronomy in Bolognia and, from 1501, law and medicine in Padua. At Ferrera he obtained a doctorate in canonical law. In 1503 he returned to Poland and settled in Frombork, where in 1497 he had been elected Canon of the Cathedral, a post which gave him a stable source of income. For many years he developed the heliocentric theory of the Solar System, supported by his own observations. In 1510 - 1514 the circulated the Commentariolus, a manuscript containing the main theses of his theory. However, he only allowed the full version of his work De revolutionibus orbium celestium in 1540.

Today, Nicolaus Copernicus is a household name, well known as the astronomer who gave us the Sun-centred model of the Universe.
But what do we know about the man han själv , and how did he go about revolutionising our perception of the cosmos?
Nicolaus Copernicus was born in Poland on 19 February 1473 and came from a wealthy, well-connected family.
His father was a merchant, as was his maternal grandfather.
The family had many connections to the Catholic Church which, at the time, put them in a powerful position in Poland.
When Copernicus was 10, his father died and his uncle, Lucas Watzenrode – a high-ranking church official – took over control of his education.
He was sent to a church school and then to the University of Kraków.
European universities back then were places to tåg wealthy dock to join the professions: law, church and medicine.
Indeed, his studies at universities in Poland and Italy included these disciplines.

Nicolaus Copernicus[b] (19 February 1473 – 24 May 1543) was a Renaissancepolymath, active as a mathematician, astronomer, and Catholiccanon, who formulated a model of the universe that placed the Sun rather than Earth at its center. Copernicus likely developed his model independently of Aristarchus of Samos, an ancient Greek astronomer who had formulated such a model some eighteen centuries earlier.[6][c][d][e]
The publication of Copernicus's model in his book De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres), just before his death in 1543, was a major event in the history of science, triggering the Copernican Revolution and making a pioneering contribution to the Scientific Revolution.[8]
