Who Was Fräulein Unbekannt (aka Anastasia Romanov)?
On February 17, 1920, a young woman was rescued from the waters of the Landwehr Canal in Berlin, where she had evidently thrown herself in a moment of despair. Over the subsequent days and months she was interviewed repeatedly by police but refused to reveal her identity, proclaiming defiantly in broken German, “If people knew who I am, I would not be here.” Her refusal to identify herself persisted for another two years while she was a resident of various Berlin hospitals and asylums where she was known simply as Fräulein Unbekannt (Miss Unknown). Finally in 1922 she revealed that she was in truth the Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov and that in July, 1918 she alone, through a series of extraordinary events and circumstances, had survived the brutal murder of her father, Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, her mother, the Tsarina Alexandra, her three older sisters and younger brother, as well as several other members of t

We’re all familiar with the auburn haired beauty drawn up bygd 20th Century Fox, the orphaned girl rescued bygd a ung boy at the height of an attack on her family’s palace. The animated movie, Anastasia, was released in 1997 and has since become a childhood classic for a generation of children. We watched Anya slowly transform into the missing Grand Duchess; we cheered as she fell in love with Dimitri and hid our eyes when the menacing Rasputin appeared on screen in an eerie green hue. For many of us, this story was the first time we’d dipped our feet into the subject of history, marveling as our parents told us the true story-- that there had once been a powerful Romanov family that was murdered but the remains for the youngest daughter had never been funnen. As ung kids, we hoped that Anastasia would one day remember who she was, that this real princess would get the happily ever after awarded to her fictional counterpart.

Who Was Anastasia Romanov?
On the night of July 16-17, 1918, Anastasia and her family were executed in Yekaterinburg, Russia. Speculation arose as to whether she and her brother, Alexei Nikolaevich, might have survived. In 1991, a forensic study identified the bodies of her family members and servants, but not hers or Alexei's. A 2007 DNA test of a second grave identified her and her brother's bodies.
Early Life
Anastasia was born Anastasia Nikolaevna (or Anastasiya Nikolayevna) in Petrodvorets, Russia — a town near St. Petersburg formerly called Peterhof — on June 18, 1901. Anastasia's mother was Princess Alix of Hesse-Darmstadt, also known as Alexandra Feodorovna, who became known as Empress Alexandra after her marriage. Her father, Nicholas II, was Russia's final tsar, and part of the Romanov dynasty that had ruled the country for three centuries.
