Cliveden was bathed in glorious early-summer sunshine as seven young men and women arrived at the Italianate mansion to have their photograph taken for Tatler. Here is a group that represents society’s New Order – self-possessed, successful, their stars in the ascendant, among them a sportsman, an actor, a fine-art student, two interior designers and two restaurateurs. The six-foot-five rugby player Maro Itoje arrived last, flanked by publicists, as chef Jeremy Chan took a call from a food supplier and everyone else turned their thoughts to the clothes. What clothes, what models: in Cliveden’s French Dining Room – shipped here by William Waldorf Astor in from Madame de Pompadour’s Château d’Asnières – it was a perfect case of Old World meets Young England.
